In reviewing Salt Spring Island, you have to inevitably ask why people choose to stay for so long on an island that would otherwise seem isolated and out of touch with the hustle and bustle of so-called “everyday life”.

Well it comes down to a simple answer really and that is ‘community’, a rare and vanishing attribute of modern living. While we live in a time when paradoxically, personal contact and relations seem to have technologically advanced by leaps and bounds while on the other hand our sense of community has somehow diminished.

Islanders by nature, are unto themselves as much concerned about privacy as anyone and yet this unincorporated district with its somewhat less structured governmental administration affords a uniquely less bureacratic existense.

It therefore presents an opportunity for the residents themselves to organize, often as a primarily volunteer force, to create a sense of community decision making that is at once vital, sometimes polarizing but always compelling.
